‘Kind’ or ‘genre’

While ‘kind’ and ‘genre’ can act as synonyms, they can also mean something a little different. ‘Kind’ can also refer specifically to fiction or nonfiction, as in, “What kind of book do you like?”

‘Genre’, however, always refers to the category or subgroup of either fiction or nonfiction – cookbooks and fairy tales are both genres.
