You have now completed Part A of this exercise. Some of the sentences were false. Find out why with the explanations below:
- 1. Rosa Parks lived with her parents on a farm near Montgomery.
False – She lived with her mother, brother and maternal grandparents on the farm, after her parents separated.
- 3. She finished high school when she was a teenager.
False – She left school to take care of her sick grandmother. However, she later got her high-school diploma, in 1933.
- 5. She refused to give her bus seat to a white passenger because she was tired from working all day.
False – In her 1992 autobiography, My Story, she said, “People always say that I didn’t give up my seat because I was tired, but that isn’t true…
I was not tired physically. No, the only tired I was, was tired of giving in.”
- 7. Parks said that Martin Luther King was her personal hero.
False – She said that Malcolm X was her personal hero.
- 9. Parks was the first black person to have a funeral at the Capitol Rotunda.
False – She was the first woman and the second black person to have a funeral there.
