Although New York is under lockdown, like the rest of the world, the city’s governor Andrew Cuomo has announced that it is not necessary for people to postpone their weddings – he is allowing couples to get married online! Wedding ceremonies were stopped at the beginning of the epidemic in the USA, but the city of New York has adapted to the health crisis. The governor has found a way for couples to go ahead with their wedding plans. How? Couples apply for a marriage license online, and once they receive it, they get married virtually on video conferencing.
For those people who are worried if their wedding is legitimate, Mr Cuomo has assured them that online weddings are just as legal as traditional weddings. While this was previously illegal, Mr Cuomo said, “There is now no excuse when the question comes up for marriage. You can do it by Zoom.” Although Zoom is not the only platform that is available, it is a favourite because the happy couple can invite friends and family to the wedding. Even after lockdown is lifted in the USA, it would be a good idea to postpone social gatherings with large groups of people. For this reason, online weddings will continue for many months.
It is too soon to talk about marriage, but Jeremy Cohen and Tori Cignarella are probably COVID-19’s most creative first date. The duo live in neighbouring buildings in Brooklyn. She was dancing on the roof of her building when Cohen saw her and decided to send her his phone number by drone.
They planned a virtual date and had dinner together at separate tables in their own homes. How did they speak to each other? On video call, of course. Cignarella says, “Whether anything romantic pursues out of this or not, at the very least, I’ve gained a friend. Especially because he lives just across the street: I’m really excited to have a nearby friend I can hang out with, once this quarantine is hopefully lifted, very soon.” This is human adaptability at its best!
