If you didn’t know who Amanda Gorman was before President Joe Biden’s inauguration in January 2021, you probably do now. It would be difficult to not notice this dynamic and driven young activist who is also the youngest poet in history to recite at a presidential inauguration.
The poem ‘The Hill We Climb’, read aloud by 22-year-old Amanda Gorman declared, “Let the globe, if nothing else, say this is true, that even as we grieved, we grew. That even as we hurt, we hoped. That even as we tired, we tried. That we’ll forever be tied together, victorious, not because we will never again know defeat, but because we will never again sow division.”
Gorman was born in Los Angeles and raised alongside her twin sister, Gabrielle, and older brother, Spencer, by their single mother. Amanda’s sister Gabrielle is just as much of a go-getter as Amanda – she’s a filmmaker and activist.
Amanda is not only the youngest poet to deliver an inaugural poem, she was also the first National Youth Poet Laureate in 2017. And prior to that, she was named as the Youth Poet Laureate of Los Angeles in 2014 when she was only 16 years old! Amanda has been in love with poetry since she was a small girl.
Despite having a speech impediment, Amanda has thrived against all odds to become an inspirational speaker who recites her poetry with finesse and grace. One of Gorman’s inspirational models is Maya Angelou who, herself, spoke at Bill Clinton’s inauguration in 1993. While the USA is accustomed to seeing singers perform at the Super Bowl, Gorman recited poetry at last year’s Super Bowl instead.
Everything but idle, Gorman founded a non-profit organisation called One Pen One Page. Its mission is to empower young people to eliminate inequality through education. She is also a United Nations Youth Delegate and has a written a children’s picture book called Change Sings: A Children’s Anthem.
But while Gorman has achieved more at 22 than most of us do in a lifetime, she does not intend to stop there – she has announced her intention to run for president in 2036. Watch this space!
