If you work remotely – either because of the COVID-19 pandemic or because that is the nature of your job – you now have the opportunity of working from home in Montserrat, an island in the Carribean. Doesn’t that sound cool?
Montserrat is offering professionals and entrepreneurs the opportunity to swap their home office for one from which they will have a view of the beach for a year. Deputy President of Montserrat, Samuel Joseph, says, “The global pandemic has changed how we live and work, and as multinationals and leading start-ups across the world accelerate their rates of digital adoption, the need to be physically present to fulfil professional responsibilities has been redefined.”
You are eligible for the 12-month Remote Worker Programme if your job is location-independent and relies on telecommunication technologies. But don’t pack your bags yet! You must also be able to prove that your employer is registered in your home country and that you have a contract or are a partner or shareholder in that company. If you don’t fit into this category, then you can also apply if you are a freelancer or consultant and work under contract with your clients who must not live in Montserrat.
If this describes you and your job, you may start packing, but wait! How about your income – do you earn enough to be considered for the programme? You must be able to support yourself financially during the year you will be living the beach-life. If your annual income is equal to or higher than $70,000, you may apply.
But what about COVID-19 in Montserrat? There have been no active cases since June 2020, which is incredible, but this is no fluke. It’s due to the strict health protocols the authorities in Montserrat have set up. How many cases has Montserrat had since the beginning of the pandemic? A paltry thirteen, and only one death! So, if you qualify for remote working in Montserrat, be prepared to buckle down and respect the procedures this UK territory insists on, or stay at home.
