While South Africa is a beautiful country to visit in any season, spring is a season that will delight you if are discovering Africa in October. Temperatures are mild, the north is on the cusp of the rainy season, and shoulder season prices for accommodation still apply. In the west, the spring flowers are blooming, and wild animals in the game parks all over the country are giving birth.
What’s not to like?
At the top of the list of things to do should be a safari! In the game parks, lush African vegetation bursts into life with the first rains of the season. Wildlife and their offspring are still easy to spot as the bush hasn’t yet become dense with the wet season. While the days are hot, early morning safaris no longer have the bite of the winter cold. Perhaps you’ll be one of the lucky few to spot a pride of lions?
Africa is nothing if not the epitome of natural beauty. If flowers are your thing, head off to the west coast and the semi-desert of the Northern-Cape. Weather conditions permitting, a magnificent wildflower display will be carpeting the landscape during the month of October. There’s nothing quite as magical as seeing the muted browns of the desert transforming into a kaleidoscope of colour as wildflowers burst into being.
Spring is also a great time to hang out at the beach and surf or bodyboard. While the heat in the province of Kwa-Zulu Natal or the Cape can be stifling in the summer months, the cool mornings and warm days of October are perfect for enjoying a day in the sun. September to November is also peak whale-viewing season, and if you’re lucky, you might catch a sight of these majestic creatures as they migrate past the coast of Hermanus and the Western Cape on their way to Antarctica.
The climate, the fact that peak tourist season is over and the wakening of nature after an African winter makes October a fabulous month for visiting South Africa. Enjoy!
