Port Oakland, in the San Francisco Bay, is the fifth busiest container port in the USA. It can receive about 99,000 containers every month. Danny Wan, Executive Director for the Port of Oakland says, “We are proud of the 84,000 jobs that the port and its partners create.” Creating jobs is important for the economy, but is the port respectful of the environment? The answer is maybe.
It's impossible for a port to eliminate all pollution, but Port Oakland has a plan. In 2019, they created a project to eliminate harmful emissions from maritime activities. The goal was to lower emissions by 85%. How? Some ideas include:
· using electric vehicles and cranes
· using green hydrogen which is generated through renewable electrolysis
· installing solar panels

In 2020, the port compared emissions from 2005 and 2020. Was it good or bad news? There was an 85% reduction in harmful emissions. Nitrous oxide emissions went down by 40% and sulphur oxides by 95%. Traffic at Port Oakland was 8% higher in 2020 than in 2005. So, this is a positive result. Wan says, “Our mission is to promote efficient commerce and create jobs while meeting obligations to clean the air and the environment.”
Port Oakland is also looking for other solutions. They are thinking of battery technology and creating electricity themselves. They are also investing in a software called Just in Time which stops traffic congestion. The software helps ships and the port communicate information about the time of arrival. How does this help? Captains can reduce speed so they arrive on time. When they arrive early, they idle outside the port until they can enter. This creates harmful emissions.
Is it possible to have a 100% green port? Probably not. But a green port is a port that invests in environmentally-friendly and sustainable operations in maritime industry. And Port Oakland is making an effort!
