What’s the word?

When you start learning English, there’s a lot to master: grammar, vocabulary, listening and speaking. It’s not always easy!

The best way to progress is to use your English. This means you must have simple conversations with other people. But what happens when you don’t know all the words you need. What’s the solution?

Here are some tips to help you find a word:

- Find a similar word. For example, instead of using the word ‘joyful’, you can say ‘happy’.

- Maybe you know the opposite word? For example, if you don’t know the word ‘miserly’, you can say ‘not generous’.

-  Do you know the word in another context? Here’s an example: maybe you don’t know the simple past form of the verb ‘to make’. But I’m sure you know the expression, ‘Made in China’!

- Describe the word. For example, if you want to talk about nail clippers, you can say, ‘We use it to cut nails” or “It’s like scissors, but for nails, not paper”.

- Finally, you can also use the dictionary. Online dictionaries like Word Reference are excellent tools. Word Reference gives you examples to help you understand. There’s even a forum where you can ask questions.

- Don’t be afraid to draw, use hand gestures, mime or make a specific sound. Sometimes, the quickest way to find the word for ‘wolf’ is to howl out loud!

But what if you need help with a sentence, not just a word? Can you use AI as a translation tool? Although AI can help you find a word, it’s not a good idea to use it for translation. If you use AI to translate whole sentences, you will never learn to speak English independently.

 

The best way to learn is to do. Repetition will help you remember. The more you remember, the more confidence you will have. The more confidence you have, the more you will speak. The more you speak, the better your English will become.
