May in France is full of bank holidays – yay for May! So, take a mini break and go to Malta for a few days. Coastal walks, historic cities, day trips, and evenings by the harbour… what’s not to love?

The weather is usually warm but not hot, the sea is cool but not cold, and the summer crowds haven’t arrived yet. For many travellers, these are the best conditions for a relaxing Mediterranean holiday.

Easier sightseeing

Malta is best experienced on foot. But walking through the streets, bastions, harbour viewpoints, and coastal promenades is hot work. Despite the cool sea breeze, the heat from hot stone and concrete can be suffocating in summer.

Cities and coastline

Malta isn’t only about beaches, and it isn’t only about history. Some of Malta’s appeal comes from how easy it is to change activities. In May, because the weather is cooler and there are fewer tourists, you can mix different activities together in one day. Start with a morning of sightseeing and shopping in Valletta. Then, spend the afternoon at the beach followed by a stroll along the promenade in Sliema. End your day with a delicious seafood dinner at a waterfront restaurant of your choice!

Fewer crowds

In May, the islands are busy but not heaving with crowds. Restaurants, ferries, and attractions are all open, but the queues are shorter and reservations are easier to make. And anyway, who wants a bunch of strangers in the background of their selfie?

Cheaper airfare

A round trip from Paris or Nice to Malta International Airport is only about 180€ per person in May. An average flight from France to Malta is less than three hours. So, catch a cheap flight early in the morning, and you can be strolling on the beach by lunchtime!
