Kobe Bryant was drafted into the NBA (National Basketball Association) directly after high school in 1996. This makes him the youngest person ever to play professional basketball in the US at just 18. His amazing, 20-year career was spent playing for the Los Angeles Lakers basketball team, where he won five NBA Championships. Eighteen of those years he played as an All-Star. He was also a member of the US Olympic team, where he won two gold medals.
He married Vanessa Laine in 2001 and the couple had four daughters.
In 2003, Bryant was charged with one count of sexual assault. He maintained his innocence, and the charges were dropped. His reputation was hurt badly, however. This – and the assassin from the Quentin Tarentino film Kill Bill – inspired him to take the nickname ‘Black Mamba’ as an alter ego. This was a coping mechanism – a way to separate his professional life on the court from his personal life off the court. He said in a 2014 interview with The New Yorker: “The name [Kobe Bryant] just evokes such a negative emotion. I said, ‘If I create this alter ego, so now when I play this is what's coming out of your mouth, it separates the personal stuff, right?’”
He was well on his way to becoming the greatest player of all time when he injured repeatedly in the early 2010s. In his final game, in April 2016, he scored 60 points. He retired from basketball and spent his time working with charities such as the Mamba League, a partnership with Bryant, Nike and the Los Angeles Boys and Girls Clubs that gave to hundreds of kids free access to basketball.
Kobe Bryant even won an Oscar in 2018 in the Best Animated Short category for his short film called “Dear Basketball”.
Bryant and his daughter, Gianna, age 13, were killed Sunday, January 28, 2020 in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California along with six other passengers and the pilot.
