Welcome to 2019, and a very Happy New Year to you!
In the US, we say ‘Happy New Year!’ on New Year’s Eve and on New Year’s Day. After that, you may (or may not) say it to other people you see, but there is no fixed rule that you must say it to everyone you see for the first time before the end of January.
At least one-third of the Brits like to make New Year’s Resolutions – promises of things they want to improve over the next year. Ten of the most popular are ‘to lose weight’, ‘to exercise more’, ‘to quit smoking/drinking/eating sweets’, ‘to save money’, ‘to be better at time management’, ‘to change jobs/find a new job’, ‘to learn a language’, ‘to manage stress’, ‘to spend more time with family’, ‘to do volunteer/charity work’.
Here’s the bad news – around 88% of the resolutions people make are broken by the 2nd week of February! The British NHS (National Health Service) estimates that only 1 in 10 people succeed in keeping their resolutions for a year. Here are a few tips to help you keep your resolutions:
1. Don’t make too many resolutions – start with just one.
2. Decide before December 31st what resolutions you want to make.
3. Don’t let other people’s resolutions influence yours.
4. Be accountable – tell your friends and family what you hope to achieve.
5. Don’t give up because you have a setback – expect to make mistakes, just bounce back and continue.
Hopefully, if you decide to do some self-improvement in 2019, you can use these tips and choose a different resolution for 2020!
