If you were alive when Mozart’s opera The Magic Flute was performed for the first time, you would probably say that 1791 was the best year for music. Likewise, people who were young adults in the sixties might argue that Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Jefferson Airplane – amongst many talented artists – were the greatest musicians of all time. Which year in the 60s was the best? Impossible to choose! Obviously, everyone’s taste is different, making it difficult to be objective about which year was the best year for music.
Despite this, a UK radio station called Radio X conducted a survey which revealed 1991 to be the best year for music, according to its listeners. Why 1991? Bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, UB40, Roxette and R.E.M. are the answer to that question! Solo artists like Sting, Whitney Houston and Bryan Adams also topped the charts in 1991 with hits that people still sing along to today. However, a closer look at the survey shows that many of Radio X’s listeners were teenagers in 1991. Why is this important?
Psychologists explain that during our developmental years, we learn about and make important life-changing decisions. It’s a time when many teenagers experience their first love relationships which either fizzle out in bittersweet agony or grow into long-term ones. It is also during this time that teens construct their cultural and political beliefs and establish a personal view of the world. These factors contribute to forming a teen’s identity. Psychologist Dr Catherine Loveday goes on to say that, "Music has an intrinsic capacity to regulate emotions so these songs naturally become embedded in our important memories, both positive and negative."
Now you know why the music you listened to during your teen years takes you back immediately to a time when all experience was heightened. Radio X’s listeners voted for 1991, but what about you? Which year do you think was the best year for music?
