Imagine your career in 2040 and beyond. Will you have the same job choices as today? Will robots and artificial intelligence do your job? Or will there be new jobs that don’t even exist today?

According to the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025, the world of work is changing quickly. The report asked more than 1,000 companies worldwide about the future of jobs. It predicts that some jobs will disappear, but many new jobs will also be created. By 2030, there may be about 170 million new jobs, while 92 million jobs could change or disappear. This means that, in total, there could be 78 million more jobs in the world.

So, what will these new jobs be? Jobs linked to artificial intelligence, computers, data and technology are expected to thrive. However, the future won’t only be about technology. Jobs in healthcare, education, transport and the environment should also become more important.

But what skills will people need in the future? The answer is not to “learn more about technology”. The World Economic Forum says that human skills will also be very important. Being creative, solving problems, working with other people and being resilient will help people succeed.

The report also talks about a ‘skills gap’. This means that many people today don’t have the skills they need for future jobs. Around 40% of the skills needed for jobs today may change by 2030. The report says that 59 out of 100 workers will need to learn new skills or improve their skills in the next few years.

What does this mean for the younger generation? We need to ask if schools are preparing young people for the future. Memorising information is still important, but students also need to learn how to think, solve problems and adapt to new situations. After all, some of the jobs they will do in the future may not even exist yet!

The future of work may seem uncertain, but one thing is clear – learning shouldn’t stop after school. The people who will have the best chance of success are the people who will continue learning new skills throughout their lives. Are you one of them? If not, it’s not too late to become one of them!
