Can Australia ban social media for children?

Australia wants to pass a law that bans young people under 16 from social media. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says this will protect them from harm caused by social media. Why? Because many parents worry about their children’s safety online, and the government wants to help.

The new rules will be discussed in parliament this week. Who do the rules apply to? Children and teenagers who already use social media, like TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook. There will be no exceptions for children whose parents give them permission to use these platforms. Social media companies will have to stop children under 16 from using their platforms.

The new rules will not punish children and teenagers. But, Australia's online regulator, the eSafety Commissioner will enforce them. If the law passes, it will take effect in a year.

Experts agree that social media is harmful to teenagers’ mental health. But experts disagree on banning access. They don’t know if it is the best solution. Some experts say a ban won’t teach children how to use it responsibly. When teenagers eventually have access, they won’t know how to use it. Other experts believe a ban is necessary to protect children from harmful content, bullying, and social pressures.

An Australian group that represents children’s rights criticised the ban. They say it will never be effective. The group thinks it’s a better idea to set safety standards for social media platforms. They believe that the online world must be a safe place for young people. Prime Minister Albanese, however, says that educating children about social media is not enough. He thinks that social media companies influence harmful behaviour. Prime Minister Albanese says new laws are necessary to protect children from dangers online.
