On September 10th, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump met for their first debate. What happened?

The main concerns for Harris were: could she handle Trump, could she give reliable answers to questions about her political decisions, and could she appear “presidential” to US voters?

At the beginning of the debate, Kamala Harris seemed nervous. But she quickly rallied. Harris answered Trump’s questions clearly. Then, she redirected the questions and baited Trump about many issues.

Harris spoke about policy, including taxes for small businesses and families. She repeatedly said, “I have a plan,” while Trump said, “I have concepts of a plan” for the Affordable Care Act. Her arguments were coherent and intelligent. Harris was calm and in control.

In the face of Harris’ competent demeanour, Trump’s arguments seem unconvincing. Trump focused on conspiracy theories about President Biden and false stories on social media about immigrants eating pets. On the subject of overturning abortion rights, Trump said, “I did a great service in doing it.” Many people would not agree.

 

Even though Harris debated well, she could still lose the presidential campaign. Trump has a very strong following. Also, Harris often changes her mind about important issues, depending on who she is talking to. Last, unfortunately, many people don’t think a woman can be president. 

If you look at today’s polls, more than 54% thought Harris won the debate, while 31% thought Trump did. Does this mean that they will vote for Harris? Not necessarily. Only 4% said the debate changed their minds about voting.

Will people change their mind after Trump’s second attempted assassination on 15th September?

We have to wait for Tuesday, November 5th to see who will be the next president of the United States. Who do you think will win?
