Trump vs Women’s Rights

With Donald Trump back as president, many people, especially women, are worried about the future of women’s rights. Rightly so! During Trump’s first administration, the president made decisions that directly and detrimentally affected women. How? He made it more difficult for women to have access to certain rights, especially with healthcare and abortion.

One of the biggest concerns for Trump’s new administration is around abortion rights. In 2022, during Trump’s first term, he picked judges for the Supreme Court* who helped overturn the ruling of Roe v. Wade. What is Roe v. Wade? It was a law that protected women’s right to abortion for going on 50 years. After it was overturned, each state in the US was allowed to decide its own rules for abortion. Unfortunately, many states banned or restricted abortion.

During his presidential campaign, Trump stated he might support a law that banned abortion across the whole country. This would take away the right to a choice for all women in all states in the US.

Trump’s views on healthcare are also a worry for women. During his last presidency, Trump tried to get rid of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The ACA is a law that helps protect people’s healthcare rights. The ACA makes sure that women don’t have to pay more for health insurance, and it covers important health services like maternity care. Without the ACA, women might pay higher healthcare costs and lose access to important health services.

Trump’s policies also raise questions about equality and safety for women in work and education. For example, the last time round his administration changed rules in Title IX, a law that protects women from harassment and discrimination in schools and sports.

Now that Trump is back in the White House, many women’s rights, and lives, are at risk. The question Americans should be asking is not, “How did this happen?” as it’s too late for that. The question they should be asking now is, “How can we protect women?”
* The Supreme Court is the highest court in the federal judiciary of the United States. There are currently nine justices on the Supreme Court, appointed for life.
