The 24th Oscar Awards were held on March 27th. It was a happy day for Sir Kenneth Branagh. Why? Branagh was nominated eight times over the years, but he never won. And this year, he did! His film called "Belfast" won the category of best original screenplay.

When he collected his award, he said, “This is an enormous honour for my family and a great tribute to an amazing city and fantastic people.” Branagh wrote, directed and co-produced the film which is based on his personal history.
The black and white film is set in the late 1960s during the time of the Troubles in Ireland. What is that? In the 1960s, there was a lot of tension between the Catholics and the Protestants in Ireland. Many families moved away from their home city because of the violence caused by the tension. Branagh’s family was one of them.
The film takes place around 96 Mountcollyer Street which was Branagh’s home address when he was a child. He says, “We were related to one half of Belfast and we went to school with the other half.” It is obvious that young Branagh’s parent’s decision to emigrate to England affected him very much as he left behind a lot of people he loved.
The film received seven nominations for the Oscar’s before winning best screenplay. It also has a talented cast of actors – Jamie Dornan, Catriona Balfe, Ciaran Hinds, Judi Dench and Jude Hill.
Branagh is proud of his heritage. He says that he always brags about being Irish when people ask him where he comes from. The film is his attempt to understand the difficult decision his parents made to leave Belfast. He says, “This story is the search for joy and hope in the face of violence and loss. We lost some people along the way.”
