Malta is a year-round holiday destination, but the summer months see the island jam-packed with tourists. While you may prefer travelling during shoulder season, consider a trip to Malta for the Malta Summer Carnival in Bugibba which takes place from a Friday to a Sunday towards the end of August every year.
A carnival in summer? That’s right, the Malta Summer Carnival is a staple in the island’s calendar. Over the last few years, it has also become popular with visitors to the island. Put on your most colourful costume and join the parade, mardi gras-style! Everyone can take part – why not you?
The Carnival’s programme includes live music, dancing and floats. You can also eat delicious local food while watching street performers strut their stuff. The main events on the Friday and Saturday take place in Bugibba in the North of Malta. One activity you must not miss is the traditional ġostra which is a game originating from the period of the Knights of St John in Malta. A large pole with a flag at the end is set up over the sea and covered in lard to make it slippery. What’s the point of that? People must climb the pole to capture the flag at the end without slipping off and falling into the sea. It’s a lot harder than it seems!
On the Sunday, the summer Carnival moves to the southern town of Marsaskala for a nocturnal parade on its last day. The parade wends its way along the sea-side promenade from 7pm into the night.
