Wednesday is a winner!

When someone asks you, “Do you like Wednesday?”, they are:

1. asking you for your opinion on a day of the week?

2. asking you if you like a Netflix series by Tim Burton?

The answer is obviously number 2! Why? Because ‘Wednesday’ is a spin-off of The Addams Family series. It’s also the name of Wednesday Addams – the daughter in the original series. 

In the Netflix series, the morbid Wednesday is played by Jenna Ortega. She’s called Wednesday for a very good reason. There is an old English nursery rhyme that says,

“Monday's child is fair of face, Tuesday's child is full of grace, Wednesday's child is full of woe, Thursday's child has far to go, Friday's child is loving and giving, Saturday's child works hard for his living, and the child that is born on the Sabbath day is bonny and blithe, and good and gay.”  

Wednesday is full of woe. She never smiles, and she is fascinated by the macabre. But the series is very popular with teenagers. In this supernatural mystery, Wednesday must master her psychic ability in a new school and stop a killer. Exciting!

In fact, the series is so popular that one scene became a TikTok phenomenon. In episode 4 called ‘Woe, What a Night’, Wednesday is at her school prom. She struts her stuff to the song called ‘Goo Goo Muck’ by the Cramps. But TikTok fans changed the music to ‘Bloody Mary’ by Lady Gaga. And Lady Gaga loved it so much that she filmed herself dancing Wednesday’s dance on TikTok. Then, other celebrities did it too! 

Lady Gaga tweeted, “Slay Wednesday! You’re welcome at Haus of Gaga anytime (and bring Thing* with you, we love paws around here).”

The success was a surprise to Jenna Ortega. She was suffering from COVID at the time. She also choreographed the dance herself. She says, “I actually felt really insecure about this." Despite these problems, fans loved the dance scene. 

Well done, Wednesday! Perhaps you have a reason to smile now?

*Thing is the fictional character in the Addams Family that is a hand. It is sent by Wednesday’s parents to look after Wednesday in her new school.
