Marianne Williamson for President – why not?

Marianne Williamson is a candidate for President of the United States. Unfortunately, she’s not being taken seriously. What beef do the American people have with her? Is it because she’s a woman? In part, yes, but it’s mostly because of her past.

For more than four decades, Williamson has been a spiritual and religious leader. She’s the successful author of 15 books, four of which topped the New York Times best-selling lists. While successful in her field, many Americans believe her professional background doesn’t equip her for the world of politics in the way being a lawyer, senator or governor might.

In addition to being a successful author, Williamson founded Project Angel Food in 1989, a non-profit organization that provides meals to victims of HIV/AIDS. She has fought against poverty, is anti-hunger and supports racial reconciliation. In 2004, Williamson co-founded The Peace Alliance and helped create the U.S. Department of Peace.

Williamson is obviously someone who knows how to get things done. What does she want to do if she becomes President? She says, “I saw so many people whose lives were in deep distress due to bad public policy. They did everything right. There was no reason for life to be so hard.” She is advocating for issues like public healthcare and free schooling.

While Williamson is focussing on important issues, her campaign is a long shot. She’s a Democrat, like Joe Biden, and the last time an incumbent president wasn’t renominated by his party was in 1884. So, she’ll be fighting for the Democratic nomination before she can begin fighting for presidency. Marianne’s chances of becoming Democratic nominee are slim, but she’s popular with the youth, women and minorities who feel they are being ignored. So, who knows?

Williamson says, “I’ve had a 40-year-career working with people whose lives are in trouble. When I started that was the exception, not the rule. The work I did then was an adequate response to the suffering I saw in front of me, but now there seems to be a ubiquitous wave of people’s lives falling apart.”

Surely someone needs to be there to pick up those pieces, or to prevent the breakdown in the first place?
