 The title of prince of Wales is a special one. Why? It’s reserved for the next person who will be king. There is no uncertainty. Prince William, King Charles III’s eldest son, is now Prince of Wales.

The title began in 1301 when King Edward I gave it to his son, Edward II. This means the title is more than 700 years old!

King Charles became Prince of Wales in 1969 when he was 20 years old. When he married Lady Diana Spencer, she became the Princess of Wales. When a woman marries into the royal family, she holds the feminine version of her husband’s title. Princess Diana was the last person to hold that title. When she died, King Charles’ second wife, Camilla Parker Bowles, did not hold the title.

 Why? The reason is simple. Princess Diana was very popular with the British people. The royal family didn’t want to stir up bad feelings about Camilla. So, Camilla’s title was the Duchess of Cornwall. This is the feminine version of one of King Charles’ other titles – the Duke of Cornwall.

Now, Queen Elizabeth has passed away and Charles is King. This means that the title of Prince of Wales goes to Prince William and his wife, Princess Kate, who becomes Princess of Wales. The British public like Kate as much as they liked Diana. She talks to them, asks them questions and she shows them she is genuinely interested in them.

William and Kate were Duke and Duchess of Cambridge before they became Prince and Princess of Wales. Who gets that title now? They keep it! So, how many titles do they have? William and Kate hold seven titles. They are Prince and princess of Wales, Duke and Duchess of Cornwall, Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Duke and Duchess of Rothesay (which they use only when they’re in Scotland), Earl and Countess of Chester, Earl and Countess of Strathearn and Baron and Baroness of Carrickfergus.

Phew! Do you think they remember all their titles?

uncertainty = incertitude

the eldest = le plus vieux

to hold =  (ici) détenir

last =  dernier

to stir up = semer la zizanie

to pass away =  décéder

as much as = autant que

genuinely = sincèrement

to keep = garder

an Earl = un Comte

Phew! = Ouf !
