Everyone loves a film starring a dog, right? Lions, pandas, bears or even inanimate objects like cars can speak in Hollywood films.  But did you know that it’s more common to see a main character in a film that is an animal rather than a woman over 60? Shocking? You bet!

A new study by a UK campaign called Age Without Limits has revealed some surprising facts about the film industry. The study looked at the 100 most successful films released in the United Kingdom between 2023 and 2025. It found that only five of these films had a woman over the age of 60 as the main character. However, around twenty films had a talking animal in the leading role. Even more surprising, was the discovery that there were also six films with a male actor called Chris as the main star.

So, why are these results important? For one, they show that older women are not well represented in popular films, which reflects society’s opinion about the importance (or lack thereof) of women over 60. In addition, the lack of representation also shows younger women that despite all the hard work they put into their careers early on, they will become obsolete once they reach 60.

Famous British actress Emma Thompson, aged 67, says that older women have interesting stories to tell and deserve to be seen on screen. She believes that films should represent real life, where people of all ages play important roles in society. Some experts also say that better representation of older women can help fight age discrimination.

Of course, talking animals are fun and many people love animated films. However, audiences also enjoy watching talented actresses like Meryl Streep, Helen Mirren and Julianne Moore perform. Come on, Hollywood, it’s time to do better!
