Many people think of James Bond when they hear the name Sean Connery, but Connery was more than a mere character in a film. He was a man who came from humble beginnings, a man with talent and an astute businessman.
Thomas Sean Connery was born on August 25th, 1930 in Edinburgh, Scotland. His family was so poor that Connery’s crib was the bottom drawer of a dresser! When he was nine years old, Connery worked for four hours every morning delivering milk before he went to school. A far cry from the affluence he would enjoy later in life as a world-famous actor.
Connery was a keen sportsman who played football semi-professionally and even participated in the Mister Universe bodybuilding competition in London in 1953. His acting career began in the same year. His first role? A sailor in the musical South Pacific1!
Although he is famous for playing her Majesty’s number-one spy in seven James Bond films, Connery acted in more than 70 films, TV series and the theatre. Some of his films include Highlander, The Hunt for Red October2 and The Untouchables3. He also won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in the 1964 film Marnie4, and two BAFTA awards, three Golden Globes and a Henrietta Award. Nothing to sniff at!
Sean Connery was married to Diane Cilento from 1962 to 1973, and then to the French painter Micheline Roquebrune in 1975. He had one son called Jason Connery who is also a British actor – they say apples don’t fall far from the tree…
Sean Connery died on October 31st, 2020 at his home in the Bahamas where he lived with his wife Micheline.
