Look to the British!

The UK are setting an example for the rest of the world in terms of the refugee crisis. While many people have criticised how the UK government treats refugees, there are charities, non-profit organisations and individuals who work hard at welcoming refugees to the country. This is definitely a time to look to the British if you want to learn about benevolence!

Hastings Supports Refugees is a community group whose volunteers are the first on shore to welcome refugees who arrive by boat. A spokesperson for the group says, “We bring them fish and chips, and cups of tea.” Often refugees have been at sea for days so many volunteers also bring clean, dry clothes to give to the refugees. 

Many refugees who arrive in the UK seeking asylum are grateful and would like to give something back. Migrateful is an organisation that gives cooking classes taught by migrant chefs. As a refugee, it’s not always easy to find employment because of legal and linguistic reasons. By working with Migrateful, the chefs can use their talents and knowledge and feel useful. “Feeling valued as a teacher can be so important. This is a chance for them to use their skills and give something back,” says the organisation’s founder Jess Thompson.

One very practical charity helps refugees find employment. Breaking Barriers works out of London, Manchester and Birmingham allowing refugees in those cities to acquire the skills and confidence to find a job. They use volunteers to teach English and help the refugees understand the UK job market.  

As a people, the British have been eager to donate clothes, toiletries and other necessary items. Care4Calais is a charity from Manchester that collects and distributes donations across the UK. A spokesperson for Care4Calais says, “The most in-demand items are quality footwear and coats for adults and children, as well as buggies, baby carriers and unlocked smartphones.”

If you want to help, you can contact these organisations or create your own. Why not? As the famous anonymous quote says, “In a world where you can be anything, be kind.”
