On May 13th, Doris Day, an American actress, singer and animal activist died at the age of 97. She started as a big-band singer but is known more for her film career. She was included in the list of the 25 most popular stars in the US from 1950-1968, and in the top five of that list for four years. Onscreen, she cultivated the persona of the era’s ideal: innocent, and G-rated in her love affairs. In her own words, “I have the unfortunate reputation of being ‘Miss Goody Two-Shoes’, America’s virgin, and all that…” This was nothing like her real life, which included four marriages ending in three divorces. Her fourth husband died.
In 1948 she starred in her first film: Romance on the High Seas. Over the next several decades she made 38 more films of all genres. Her biggest successes began with 1959’s Pillow Talk, which also starred Rock Hudson. This genre of comedy seemed to be made for her; it is also the reason for her squeaky-clean image and innocence.
She was known to all who worked with her as a happy person who never let her personal difficulties change her attitude for people. She signed personalized, autographed photos on demand until shortly before she died. All one had to do was send a letter with enough return postage and she’d send it back with a personalized photo.
After her long and successful film career (and a five-year-long television show), she retired to Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. There, she spent the rest her life working as an animal activist. She founded the Doris Day Pet Foundation (now the Doris Day Animal Foundation). She also created the Doris Day Animal League (DDAL) and lobbied in the US congress several times. The DDAL merged with The Humane Society of the United States.
She died from complications due to pneumonia.
