Up until very recently, Boris Johnson has not shown great leadership in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic. In fact,...
For several years, all Brits could talk about was Brexit. Now that it’s finally done, the next exit is that of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle from royal life. This has been named ‘Megxit’. Here’s what happened. On January 8th, Harry and Meghan made an announcement on the @sussexroyal Instagram account. They received a lot of backlash because they did not inform anyone else of their decision in advance. On January 9th, Prince William, Prince Charles and Buckingham Palace are all quoted as being ‘angry’, ‘hurt’ and ‘disappointed’ by this decision. We discover that this was announced sooner than expected because the Press threatened to make the announcement. On January 19, Buckingham Palace released an official announcement from the Queen. After that, events were put in motion for the couple to leave at the end of April. Harry gave a speech where he said the (now) oft-quoted phrase, “Just call me Harry.’ The pair will no longer use their royal titles and they are not allowed to use the word ‘royal’ in any capacity for their branding/social media.
Ever since their wedding, Meghan has been labelled as ‘difficult’ or ‘paranoid’. There are two main reasons that people should not accept that as the absolute truth. Firstly, the British Press seemed to bully Meghan time after time. What was their motivation? Racism, because Meghan is mixed race? Xenophobia, because she is not English? People dismissed the claims that the Press treated Markle differently from Prince William’s wife, Kate Middleton. However, several articles have since been written showing the headlines/stories written about each of the ladies when they were in similar situations. Read for yourself the double standards that met Meghan and Harry (link below).
Here’s just one example:
It’s understandable that Meghan and Harry want to avoid the British Press.
Secondly, throughout Prince Harry’s life, he has always appeared to be uncomfortable with all the publicity and the constraints of being a Royal. No one should be shocked that sometime in his life he would want to leave. Harry is still loved by the people, who seem to wish he and his wife continued happiness and success.
The couple first relocated to Vancouver Island, Canada. Rumors say that they are looking into buying a home in Los Angeles, California, where Meghan is from to be closer to her friends and family.
